Curriculum
Information on Key Stage 3
The Northern Ireland Curriculum seeks to empower pupils to achieve their potential and to make informed and responsible decisions throughout their lives. It is about helping pupils prepare for life and work as individuals;
- as contributors to society;
- as contributors to the economy and environment.
Home Economics has a significant role to play in this. Home Economics provides pupils with opportunities to explore real issues explicitly relevant to real-life contexts. These experiences lead to the development of a wide range of transferable skills. Of particular value is the contribution of the subject to the development of skills such as decision making and working with others.
There are three Key Concepts for Home Economics:
- Healthy Eating;
- Home and Family Life;
- Independent Living.
Key Concept – Healthy Eating
Exploring Healthy Eating provides opportunities to develop understanding required in the choice, planning, storage, preparation, cooking and serving of food.
Key Concept – Home and Family Life
Exploring Home and Family Life provides opportunities to understand the importance of the family as a caring unit.
Key Concept – Independent Living
Exploring Independent Living provides opportunities to understand the importance of becoming discerning consumers and effective managers of resources.
Information on Key Stage 4
The following is the syllabus for KS4 Home Economics:
- Unit 1: Diet and Health and Consumer Awareness
- Unit 2: Diet and Health
- Unit 3: Consumer Awareness
- Unit 1 is an examinable component and worth 40% of the GCSE grade. Unit 2 and 3 are controlled assessment tasks and worth 60% of the GCSE grade.
The following is the syllabus for KS4 Health and Social Care
- Unit 1: Working in Health and Social Care
- Unit 2: Personal Development
- Unit 2 is an examinable component and worth 40% of the GCSE grade. Unit 1 is controlled assessment tasks and worth 60% of the GCSE grade.
Information on Key Stage 5
At KS5 Applied Health and Social Care is taught. It is taught at both Single and Double Award (Single Award is worth 1 A-Level and Double Award is worth 2) This course is two thirds coursework based and one third exam based)

Extra-curricular activities
Pupils are entered for Young Cook of the Year and Take away my way competitions.
They also attend Feed your Mind careers conference at Loughry College Cookstown.
